The main political objectives of our revolution are to create a free, democratic, independent and socialist Zimbabwe and remove the domination of the foreign settler element in our society and its imperialistic and capitalist tentacles. The goal is national independence. The Zimbabwe peoples have a long tradition of self-government and independence going as far back as the mighty and glorious kingdom of Monomatapa, the first great ruler of the Shona-speaking peoples. That freedom and independence which was filched by British colonialism and imperialism some 80 years ago must be restored and a new nation created.
Every citizen of Zimbabwe shall have the right to exercise a free vote to elect members of the National Assembly and all other state institutions. The present National Assembly will be abolished and all its discriminatory laws declared null and void. All control of state power – the legislature, the administration, the judiciary, the army and the police – shall be vested in the citizens of Zimbabwe as a whole and exercised by them on a continuous basis and in an effective manner at all times. It is not enough that every adult should cast a vote every five years for a candidate imposed on him by Party bosses whom he may never see. Steps will have to be taken to make participation by all people in the affairs of their own government real and continuous.
There shall be complete equality between all persons, men and women. People of all colours, cultures and backgrounds who identify themselves with a socialist Zimbabwe will have expanded opportunities to contribute fully towards the country’s development and to fulfil their own aspirations as human beings. No-one will be permitted to exploit other free and equal human beings for his own benefit, or to receive benefits that do not derive from his own efforts.
Broad democratic freedoms – speech, press, assembly, association, movement – which have been taken away from the citizens of Zimbabwe by the settlers will be restored and guaranteed to all citizens of a free, democratic, independent and socialist Zimbabwe. All political detainees and restrictees will be released on the first possible occasion and re-united with their families. Existing concentration and detention camps will be closed and the buildings turned into adult education centres.
On the international front, ZANU has joined forces with all progressive movements and governments of socialist countries in eastern Europe, Asia and Africa and some progressive individuals in the capitalist countries in the West. In particular, ZANU has received generous and practical assistance from Governments that are anti-imperialist and revolutionary in their outlook on international affairs. Diplomatic work on the international front is aimed at exposing our enemies by bringing to the attention of others to the atrocities being committed against a part of humanity – 5 million people – in Zimbabwe. The Party relies heavily on generous financial and material assistance it receives from time to time from friendly and progressive countries and organisations and especially the Organisation of African Unity and its organs. A constant flow of factual information has to be provided to the organisations and Governments.
