Whites out: Chedondo

Zimbabwe National Army Major General, Martin Chedondo, has urged soldiers to vote for Zanu (PF) in order to rid of whites who he said were sellouts.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony of Platoon Commanders held at All Arms Battle School in Nyanga last week, Chedondo said the forthcoming elections were crucial.

“Zimbabwe is at a crossroads right now because of the whites. They have their friends outside the country and have helped in bringing sanctions to our country. Are we really ready to bring the whites back? Zimbabwe can do without them; let us get rid of them through the forthcoming elections,” said Chedondo.

Chedondo added that the grandaunts were the future torch-bearers of the country.

President Robert Mugabe has been under pressure to discipline service chiefs for such inflammatory political statements. Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai recently raised the issue with SADC and other African leaders during a diplomatic trip.

MDC-T spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora reiterated that the statements by the generals reinforced calls for security sector reform.

“What these so-called security chiefs have said vindicates our demands for security sector reform before elections,” he said. “These gentlemen are talking as if they are members of the Zanu (PF) politburo.”

The MDC-T recently wrote to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson, Rita Makarau, and the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee complaining about the conduct of military commanders. They copied the letter to SADC facilitator, South African President Jacob Zuma.
