Zanu declares no-go areas

Zanu (PF) activists in the Zanoremba housing co-operative here have denied members of opposition parties access to the area.

The supporters, who vowed to attack any rivals who set foot in the area, made the declaration at the funeral of 52-year-old Regina Matau who died at President Robert Mugabe’s rally at Chibuku stadium last week.

Last week, seven MDC activists were attacked by a mob of more than 100 suspected Zanu (PF) supporters as they were campaigning for their party in the area established by parliamentary aspirant, Christopher Chigumba.

The victims, Lloyd Goredema, Martin Mandizadza, Sherry Nyika, Laiza Mapepa, Edmore Mavhiza, Verina Muchegu and one unnamed female activist were taken to Chitungwiza Referral Hospital for treatment.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba dismissed the attack and said only four MDC- T supporters were attacked.

A Zanu (PF) supporter boasted at the funeral that those who dared campaign in the area were going to be ‘disciplined’.

“They can come at their own peril because by the time the police arrive, we will be done with them,” he said.

Zanu (PF) Spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said that true cadres from his party were promoting peace.
