Zanu (PF) youths remanded in custody for tearing MDC-T posters

Two Zanu (PF) youths will spend the weekend in custody after a Karoi magistrate denied them bail on Friday on a charge of defacing campaign material.

The two, Shepard Mahwande and Francis Makazhu, are facing charges under Electoral Act chapter 115 that prohibits damaging political parties’ campaign material.

The trial continues on Monday.

The two were allegedly seen by one Crema Muchena on July 18 2013 around 10 pm at a billboard near Karoi town council guest house, tearing posters belonging to the Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai.

The court was told that Muchena warned them against the act but they did not take heed until he summoned other party members who assisted the police to have the suspects arrested.

Three witnesses including Muchena, Collin Mapfumo and Allan Alberto testified, although Mahwande denied the charge, saying the posters could have been destroyed by some mad men roaming streets in Chikangwe high density suburb.

Magistrate Robson Finsin remanded them in custody till Monday when the investigating officer who is in possession of the 30 posters destroyed will testify.

Prosecutor Harold Matura appeared for the State.
