ZESN deploys 7,000 observers

The Zimbabwe Election Support Network says it has deployed 7,000 trained and accredited observers to all the country’s provinces 210 constituencies ahead of tomorrow’s general elections.

In a statement, the network said: “ZESN is deploying observers despite some serious challenges during the pre-election process. ZESN encourages all registered voters to go out and vote tomorrow given the current relative calm and peace in the country”.

Its Chairperson, Solomon Zwana, said about the polls: “For elections to be credible, however, they must be more than just peaceful. At a minimum, citizens must have an equal chance to register to vote; to inform themselves about all the candidates; to cast their ballot free from fear and for their votes to be properly counted,” said Dr. Solmon Zwana ZESN Chair.

“ZESN citizen observers will be at polling stations in every corner of the country to help safeguard the process – so that all eligible citizens can vote and that their votes are properly counted,” he added.

The organisation is however concerned that there have been challenges with voter registration, logistical problems regarding the July 14-15 special vote as well as unequal press coverage by the State media and the harassment of human rights defenders.

ZESN urged ala registered voters to check the list of polling stations recently published by ZEC.
