Zim Pupils Shine at Tianjin International Painting Competition

Zimbabwean arts works by pupils in various schools received the Grand, Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in the 6th Tianjin International Children’s Painting Competition. The competition was held in China last year during the Tianjin International Children’s Arts and Culture Festival that was held on July 29 - Aug 3. The running theme was Peace, Friendship and Future.

The painting competition draws children from around the world aged 18 years and below. The competition which is part of the International festival is jointly sponsored by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Tianjin Municipal People's Government. The awarded works are in four grades the Grand, Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes that are granted to painters of the outstanding works.

Two Zimbabwean paintings were awarded the prestigious Grand awards. One of the painting’s title being Old Hunter’s Tales by Richard Murombedzi(18), a student from St Georges College and the other Victory at last by Master Mavhunga (17). Apart from the Grand awards, the Gold award went to Martin Sawatidzo’s (16) piece dubbed Endangered Species and two Silver awards that were scooped by Tinashe Munyaradzi (13) from Peter Birch School of Arts’s untitled piece and Denis Kanenungo (16) with Going to the Market. Lastly, Leeroy’s Lanhi (15) artwork Rainmaking Brew and The Healing by Robin Tapfumanei (17) scooped the Bronze accolades. All these winners were awarded medals as well as certificates of participation.

Moreover, their excellent paintings were collected into the album Selected Works of the 6th International Children's Painting Competition & Exhibition (2012), copies of which were sent as gifts to the United Nations, heads of all states and all foreign embassies in China. Every prize winner was given an album with a certificate. Some of the Winners will also be invited to attend the opening ceremony of the Tianjin International Children's Painting Exhibition and all activities of the next Tianjin International Children's Culture & Art Festival.

The festival, themed "Peace, Friendship and Future", is characterized by the concept of "Children of the world being happy together". This gala for children all over the world has attracted art troupes from 55 different countries and regions overseas, as well as 38 domestic troupes, with the number of participants totaling over 2,000. With over 2 000 participants and 7 Zimbabwean students’ artworks, having scooped awards is evidence that Zimbabwean artists are talented regardless of age.
