Bafana name team for Warriors friendly

South Africa’s national soccer team coach Gordon Igesund is not taking any chances and has named a strong squad for the international friendly match against Zimbabwe on September 10.

The coach has named both his World Cup squad for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Botswana set for the Moses Mabida Stadium in Durban on September 7 and the one to face the Warriors and most of the players in the World Cup squad are also in the team to face Zimbabwe.

Igesund told the media that only the eight foreign based players called will not be available for the Zimbabwean friendly as they will be returning to their clubs. Also are Orlando Pirates players who have also been excused as their team has a Caf Champions League match over the same week.

However, Pirates’ new signing and striking hotshot Kermit Erasmus has been included in the squad as he is not eligible to play for Pirates in the continental tournament after joining them well after the registration deadline.

Sphiwe Tshabalala of Kaiser Chiefs who scored the first goal of the 2010 World Cup and seasoned goalkeeper Itemeleng Khune who was voted the top player in the South African Absa Premiership last season will lead the team against the Warriors.

Also included are such household names as striker Benard Parker also of Kaiser Chiefs, Mamelodi Sunsdowns’ Bongani Zulu, Lerato Tshabango of Moroka Swallows, as well as Tsepo Gumede of Platinum Stars.

The team is well balanced with players drawn from most of the clubs in the PSL among them AJax Cape Town, Bloemfontein Celtic, Free State Stars, Pretoria University, Amazulu, and Supersport United.

The match is being played on a date reserved for friendly matches by Fifa and as such will have a bearing on the Fifa Coca Cola world rankings when they are updated the next time.

As a result, the Premier Soccer League in South Africa has also suspended matches for that week as clubs are obliged to release players for international duty in such games.

Both teams will play in the Africa Nations Championships to be held in South Africa between January and February and are using the match to assess their players for the tournament.

South Africa qualify as hosts while Zimbabwe took the other slot reserved for southern Africa after overcoming neighbours Zambia 1-0 in a two legged tie.
