Dentist shortage

There are only two dentists working at government hospitals in the province, it has emerged.

The two were appointed last month and will provide dental
services for Masvingo’s seven administrative districts.
Officially opening this year’s continuing Professional Development
meeting for dental therapists and technicians at Great Zimbabwe
last week, the Acting Masvingo Provincial Medical Director, Kudzai
Masinire, said it was sad that Masvingo province did not have
adequate dental therapists in government hospitals.

“Masvingo province does not have adequate
dental therapists at most of its districts hospitals except for Chivi,
Chiredzi and the provincial hospital which just appointed two this
month,” he
said. Without giving statistics, Masinire said most people did not know
much about the importance of oral health. He said that could be avoided if more dentists were available, adding that the ministry of health
was making efforts to ensure every district in Masvingo had a
fully operational dental department.

The professional meeting was attended by various stakeholders in the
dental department, with some participants coming as far as South
Africa.
