Econet restores Telecel interconnection

After weeks of no interconnectivity between Econet and Telecel subscribers, subscribers have welcomed the restoraration of interconnection between these two mobile telecoms giants.

"I am not bothered by what was happening between these two companies, all we wanted was to be able to call our friends and family who use Telecel sim cards,'' said Perect Mashiri, who is an Econet subscriber.

The interconnection was cut by Econet Wireless, citing that its license had strict conditions which require it to only connect with licensed operators.

Telecel's license had not been renewed, upon expiry, as the company was told to first meet an acceptable shareholding structure in terms of the indigenisation laws.

However, one Telecel subscriber, who refused to be named, alleged that Econet took advantage of Telecel's circumstances to unjustifiably enrich itself. "Econet capitalised on the move to increase its subscriber base.

Those who were trying to call Econet lines with Telecel lines were frustrated and ended up buying Econet lines, since many people use Econet lines,'' said the subscriber.

However, following the renewal of Telecel's operating license, a few days ago, Econet has restored its interconection and both lines can now call each other.
