Only yesterday Nkala’s nephew Hebert Nkala, who is the family spokesperson, said the family was leaving everything in the hands of God after his condition deteriorated.

“This is a very distressing period for the entire family. We are, however, grateful for the amazing work doctors and nurses are doing here. At this juncture we are appealing to all Zimbabweans to pray for him,” he said.

Nkala had developed kidney and heart–related complications which led him to being admitted at Mater Dei hospital in Bulawayo between March and April.

Nkala was instrumental in the formation of Zanu PF alongside other veteran nationalists. The party was formed at his Highfield house in Harare in August 1963.

Following independence in 1980, he served as the Minister of Finance until 1983, when the portfolio was consolidated into Finance, Economic Planning and Development and handed over to Dr. Bernard Thomas Gibson Chidzero, a senior minister.

Nkala was instead moved sideways to become Minister of National Supplies until 1985, Home Affairs and Defence after the 1985 election. As Defence Minister he was involved in the notorious Gukurahundi massacres.

While a minister in the Zanu-PF government, Nkala became embroiled in the ‘Willowgate’ scandal, concerning the allocation of new motor vehicles to government officials, especially ministers, by Willowvale Motors in Willowvale Harare. The vehicles were subsequently sold at a huge profit.
