MDC activivists arrested

Seven MDC members including the Member of Parliament Elect for Mpopoma Phelandaba, Bekithemba Nyathi, were on Tuesday detained for 12hrs at Bulawayo Central Police station on allegations of planning to attack Zanu

(PF) supporters as well as planning an insurgency against the government ahead of today's Robert Mugabe inauguration.

Nyathi told The Zimbabwean that he was picked up at his house by police officers in plain clothes and taken to Bulawayo central police station.

"I was arrested together with other party activists on allegations of planning to attack Zanu (PF) supporters. The police said they are still investigating the allegations and will proceed by way of summons," said Nyathi in a telephone interview from Harare.

Those who were arrested include Joseph Banda, youth chairperson Frank Jabangwe, Secretary Ali Phiri, deputy youth Secretary Mthulisi Ndlovu, Donald Mabutho and Thulani Ndaba. The MDC members were quizzed by one Seargent Moyo over the allegations.

When reached for comment police national spokesperson Charity Charamba said she was not aware of the incident.
