Kucaca Phulu has been shortlisted as a possible mayor for Bulawayo.

MDC-T sources told The Zimbabwean on Monday that the party would complete the selection process before the end of this week.

“Since under the new constitution, the mayor will be equivalent to a governor, the party decided to intervene in the selection process so that a person of high integrity and reputation will be at the helm of the city.

“Phulu and Nyathi have emerged as two candidates with the requisite requirements,” said an MDC –T senior provincial executive member who refused to be named because of protocol.

Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Permanent Secretary, Killian Mpingo, recently told state media that the government had done way with the 2008 system whereby mayors were chosen from non-councillors.

MDC –T has, however, vowed to defy the directive. This country is not run through directives but the Constitution and the statues. We will ignore that directive,” said Gorden Moyo, the party’s Chairman for Bulawayo province.

MDC –T won all the 29 council wards in the city.
