MDC-T will defend constitution even from outside parliament: Mwonzora

MDC-T will confront Zanu (PF) if Mugabe and his party legislators dare make amendments to the people driven constitution, warned MDC-T spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora.

In the run up to the just ended harmonised elections, Zanu (PF) indicated that it would tamper with the constitution if it wins a two thirds parliamentary majority.

Results announced by ZEC claimed the President Mugabe won 61.09 percent of the presidential vote against Morgan Tsvangirai’s 33.94.

Zanu (PF) grabbed 158 of the 210 National Assembly seats, giving them the numerical advantage to make laws even against MDC-T’s will.

“As a party we would like to warn Zanu (PF) against tampering with the constitution. MDC-T will fiercely confront Zanu (PF) if it dares reverse people’s will as reflected by the supreme law of the land,” said Mwonzora, at a Policy Dialogue Forum held at the Southern African Political Economy Series offices, in Harare yesterday evening.

The dialogue which was moderated by University of Zimbabwe respected dean of Sociology, Rudo Gaidzanwa, had representatives of Zanu (PF) and MDC-T on its panel.

Zanu (PF) and MDC-T were represented by Goodwill Masimirembwa and Mwonzora respectively.

The dialogue was aimed at providing a postmortem of the just announced disputed election result and the whole electoral process.

MDC-T is challenging the Mugabe and Zanu (PF) victories from the legal, diplomatic and political fronts.
