Mugabe's Benz fleet floods Lilongwe

President Robert Mugabe's advance team arrived in Lilongwe today ahead of the forthcoming SADC Heads of State Summit.

Several brand new Mercedes Benz vehicles, labelled Zimbabwe, were particularly noticeable in the streets of the capital of this country that is battling extreme poverty. Government employees earn monthly salaries of MK15,000 equivalent to US$48.

It is not yet clear who is driving the vehicles, which have registration numbers of two digits ranging from Zimbabwe 03 to Zimbabwe 13. Mugabe is expected here on Saturday morning.

Ordinary citizens of Malawi can be seen gazing in admiration at the flashy vehicles, while civil society members have condemned the show of wealth by a country whose recent election is being contested on basis that it was fraudulent.
