Reports of retribution

Post election violence is on the rise here following assaults on MDC-T activists in Chibuwe last week.

Prosper Mutseyami won the House of Assembly seat for the Musikavanhu constituency as an MDC-T candidate. However, Zanu (PF) is said to be targeting Chibuwe villagers who voted for the MDC-T in the elections held on July 31.

According to our source, Zanu (PF) youth militias in a white Mitsubishi single cab without registration plates have been going door-to-door, threatening villagers.

Last Sunday, MDC-T activists John Mlambo and Ernest Sibanda were abducted and beaten by the Zanu (PF) militia. Mlambo’s relatives told this paper they found him the following day in the bush near Chibuwe clinic after he was severely assaulted for drumming up support for MDC-T.

“A group of Zanu (PF) militia broke into his house when he was sleeping. They forced-marched him to a white Mitsubishi single cab truck which had no registration plates where they said they would return him alive on condition that he gave names of the other people who were MDC-T members,” said Mlambo’s brother, Gift. “I alerted other villagers and followed the abductees. We found him dumped and bleeding from the wounds he sustained from the beatings. We then made a report at Chibuwe police but no action has been taken.”

When contacted for a comment, Mutseyami said he had received the assault reports and maintained that there was a possibility that the MDC-T supporters were being intimidated by Zanu (PF) members.

“We cannot continue living in fear like this. People are free to choose their leaders,” he said.

Zanu (PF) spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said: “Those are stage managed allegations by the MDC-T.”
