The atmosphere in Mutare and surrounding areas is clam but evidently tense as the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission announces results from the July 31 polls.

There are no celebrations and it is business as usual, with people glued to their radio sets to hear the results.

Newspaper vendors said the election results have led to a decline in paper sales as, from yesterday (Thursday), people were not interested in reading the papers.

“People are frustrated and they are not buying papers like they used to do before the polls. They had much hope but it looks all hope is fading away,” said Cleopas Mandigora (23) a newspaper vendor.

Zanu (PF) has snatched most of the seats in Manicaland from MDC-T. A 45 year old woman who cast her vote on Wednesday said all their hope is lost because they had put much faith in Tsvangirai`s MDC to bring change and revive the economy as well as create employment for thousand of jobless youths.

“The results which are being released by ZEC have dampened our spirits. We thought there was light at the end of the tunnel but the election has been stolen again. It`s still a long way to go and we learnt that election cannot bring change in our country,” said the woman who declined to be named.

People felt Southern African Development Community (SADC) and African Union (AU) has let them down by quickly endorsing the election as credible before getting full election reports from civic society and ZEC.

Former City of Mutare Mayor Brian James who contested in local authority’s election in Ward 21 and lost to Zanu (PF) described the election as a “farce”.

James said the people were bussed from other wards to vote in the ward. He said the results were not a true reflection of the will of people.
