Violence unleashed

President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu (PF) party has activated its violent machinery in the Midlands province, The Zimbabwean can reveal.

“A meeting of war veterans convened by Zanu (PF) spokesperson Rugare Gumbo on August 12 decided to deal with MDC members and supporters,” MDC-T Mberengwa North district chairperson, Robson Gambiza, told The Zimbabwean.

Zanu (PF) spokesperson Rugare Gumbo immediately refuted the allegations. “I do not know what you are talking about. I was never at such a meeting because on the date in question I was at the National Heroes Acre,” Gumbo said.

Gambiza was adamant: “People have been told, particularly in farming communities, that our members should go to Britain because they voted for the MDC. Our council candidate for Neta Ward 36 Alice Shumba has fled to Gweru”. Media reports last week showed growing incidences of violence and intimidation across the country in the aftermath of a largely peaceful poll.

MDC-T polling agents and villagers in Mashonaland Central province’s Muzarabani district have harrowing stories of violence and intimidation.

Gambiza named the ringleaders of the violent campaign as Newman Mabika, Nyamadzawo Masocha, Goka Ndlovu, Asmero Ndlovu, Nkosilathi Dube and Caeser Mafarira. “This group has caused untold suffering. Although I am not sure what was discussed at the meeting, our intelligence tells us there has been an order to deal with MDC members,” said Gambiza.
