Winter Olympics debut

Should everything go according to plan, Zimbabwe will make its historic appearance at the Winter Olympics at the 2014 Games in Russia next February.

The Snow Sporting Association of Zimbabwe, affiliated to both the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee and the Sport and Recreation Commission, is in the process of short-listing potential local athletes for the global sporting festival. Because of the climate, there are no winter sporting activities in Zimbabwe and the Snow Sporting Association of Zimbabwe represents the interests of athletes competing abroad. One of those is Luke Steyn, who is based in New Zealand and has accumulated good ranking points in alpine skiing. Steyn is also on the verge of meeting the qualifying points for the Olympics. The Winter Olympics are dominated by sports that are contested for on ice and the 20-year-old is already training in New Zealand as part of his preparations for the Games.

A regular competitor on the Federation of International Skiing Circuit, Steyn is also registered with the Snow Sporting Association of Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Olympic Committee Chief Executive Officer, Anna Mguni, recently confirmed plans to have Steyn participate at the Winter Olympics. The ZOC supremo added that there were a number of other Zimbabwean athletes scattered all over the world, who the ZOC wanted to enlist for the next Winter Olympics.
