Zanu (PF) magnanimous in victory: Gumbo

Zanu (PF) will not allow retribution against MDC-T supporters as the party wants to work with its rivals in peace to build Zimbabwe, says Zanu (PF) spokesperson Rugare Gumbo.

He said in a democracy people have the freedom of choice and association and Zanu (PF) will not victimise those who campaigned for political parties of their choice.

“Zimbabwe is one family and there is no reason for anyone to be victimised for supporting political parties other than Zanu (PF),” Gumbo told The Zimbabwean in a telephone interview.

His assurances for political tolerance came as some MDC-T supporters were reportedly being threatened and fleeing from Mbare, while in ward 14 Murezi, Chikomba Central, celebrating Zanu (PF) supporters allegedly warned MDC-T supporters of retribution soon after SADC and AU observers leave.

“As a party we are disturbed to learn that Zanu (PF) is threatening violence against people who supported MDC-T in Chikomba district,” MDC-T Mashonaland East Provincial chairperson, Pinnel Denga, told this newspaper.

Political analyst Rejoice Ngwenya said there are chances that whatever peace was prevailing, would last until the courts have given their ruling on issues to be raised by MDC-T.

“There is a possibility that people are holding their emotions until both the Constitutional and Electoral courts have given their judgements when approached by MDC-T and other aggrieved political players,” said Ngwenya.

Mass protests in reaction to the election outcome were ruled out.
