Man beaten by Home Affairs official

A Zimbabwean man was badly beaten by a Home Affairs security official at the Department of Home Affairs at Marabastad in Pretoria seven months ago.

Twenty-seven-year-old Kholwani Sibanda was severely beaten by a security officer for not standing in the queue for asylum seekers wanting to renew their documentation.

“I was beaten by a security officer with a baton stick. He damaged my bladder and I cannot walk without crutches or stand for a long time,” Kholwani said.

According to eyewitnesses, the same official assaulted a number of other foreigners at Marabastad Home Affairs. A Home Affairs official said the department was deaing with the incident.

Kholwani has renewed his asylum seekers permit after spending almost two months fighting for his life.

Sergeant Ann Poortman of Central police station said, “Kholwani has opened a case of assault with grievous bodily harm and his case is under investigation”.
