Sporting gala for orphans

Dzikwa Trust held a sporting gala for over 300 underprivileged children at the National Sports Stadium’s Arena here.

Seppo Ainamo, the organisation’s director, said this year’s event was special because the organisation managed to secure prizes for all the participants.

The gala has become an annual event for the Dzivaresekwa-based organisation, which started 11 years ago. Dzikwa’s main aim is to encourage healthy living and interaction among underprivileged children.

“We are giving away 100 trophies this year in recognition of both the winners and the losers. The highlight of this year’s event is that we have managed to get prizes for every participant. We want to acknowledge the participation of the winners and the losers because we value their presence and effort,” said Ainamo.

Participants will walk away with trophies, baseball caps, t-shirts, sports kits and balls, among a host of other prizes.

“We believe that holding these events helps children identify with each other and promotes team spirit,” he said. “Physically fit children perform better in school.”

Dzikwa Trust is a charitable organisation that sponsors more than 400 underprivileged children from Dzivarasekwa. The organisation pays school fees and buys educational materials for children.
