Prosecutor Andrew Marimo said in February the 17-year-old girls decided to stage armed robberies in order to up their standard of living.
One stole a shotgun, loaded with six rounds of ammunition, from her mother. The two, then hired Silvanos Chaoma (age unknown and still at large) to help them.
On February 5, 2013, the trio failed to rob a shop in Gweru’s Mkoba 3 after the owner scared them off. They fled and hid the gun in a garden of a house in Mkoba 2 suburb. The gun was later recovered and the two girls arrested.
Gweru magistrate, Gertrude Mayenyoso postponed the matter to next week to allow her time to determine an appropriate sentence. The girls are in custody after the state opposed bail.
