Chitungwiza man in court for perjury

A Chitungwiza Zanu (PF) member and council security staff, Mathew Mhisha, appeared this morning at the Chitungwiza Magistrate courts facing perjury charges.

The charges followed a police report made by Mhisha last Wednesday that Chitungwiza mayor, Philip Mutoti, had assaulted him.

Mutoti was arrested by Police Law and Order Officers and detained on the same day at Harare Central Police, until 0300hrs Thursday.

Mutoti denied the charges and told police that he was never part of the fight, since he was at his offices when the crime was reportedly committed.

“I am a victim of a political smear campaign,” said Mutoti. He was released after police turned the complainant, Mhishi, into accused.

Mhishi was subsequently arrested and detained in police cells. The Chitungwiza courts released him on $200 bail and would appear again before the courts on October 21.
