Saints face challenges: Mathe

It looks all doom and gloom for Zimbabwe’s 1988 PSL champions, Zimbabwe Saints, who are likely to miss out on promotion to the elite league for at least another season.

The side, somewhat of a yo-yo team since they were first relegated from the PSL about a decade ago, currently lie seventh on the 16-team Southern Region Division One league.

Their coach, Mark Mathe, told The Zimbabwean: “It is now clear that we cannot be crowned First Division champions this season and we have given up fighting for the championship.

“Our aim now is to keep ourselves in a respected position and go back to the drawing board to rectify the terrible mistakes we made during the campaign.”

With five games remaining, Saints were already out of the promotion circle and Mathe attributed their predicament to lack of consistency and goal-shy strikers during the campaign.

“There are big loopholes that must be taken care of before we can claim to be a competitive side targeting not only promotion, but survival in the PSL,” said Mathe.

“But this does not mean we will be out of the topflight for long because we are busy getting things right. We will be back in a few seasons and once that happens, there will be no stopping us from challenging for the league and even winning it again. Zimbabwe Saints is no name for a lower division club and we will definitely bounce back for good.”
