Sibanda not guilty

WOZA activist Bertha Sibanda was found not guilty of Public Indecency and Public Exposure by Magistrate Charity Maphosa on Monday. The state failed to show that Sibanda had offended anyone by disrobing in the Bulawayo Central police station courtyard on 14 February 2013.

She had pleaded not guilty to charges of public indecency, claiming that she stripped following an instruction from the arresting police officers who shouted ‘bvisa’ (remove your clothes).

Since her arrest Sibanda has appeared in court over 20 times and justice seemed elusive on many occasions. The magistrate questioned “Why would one person undress following the instruction from police and not everyone else?”

Then answered her own questions by stating, “You probably, you removed your clothes as a protestation against the group’s arrest.”
