Industry and Commerce Minister Mike Bimha told The Zimbabwean at a meeting organised by the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries that his ministry was keen to see Bata get hides at an affordable price.
“We want Bata restored to its former state. This is what I am working on. Very soon, we should start seeing positive changes at this once famous company,” he said.
Bata used to produce 10m pairs of shoes every year and employed nearly 5,000 people. Today, it makes 2m pairs with the help of 1,500 people.
The company’s managing director, Louis Pinto, said one of its key challenges was shortage of affordable raw hides on the local market because of increased exports.
