Chimoio results – too close to call

The preliminary results from Wednesday’s municipal elections in the central city of Chimoio, capital of Manica province, show the candidate of the ruling Frelimo Party, incumbent mayor Raul Conde, leading, with 52.3 per cent of the votes, to 47.7 per cent for his rival from the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), Joao Ferrao.

But these figures come from only 63 of Chimoio’s 168 polling stations. The result is thus still too close to call.

From these polling stations, the total number of votes for Conde was 10,473, and for Ferrao 9,547. In Catandica, also in Manica province, it now seems clear that victory has gone to Frelimo.

In 18 of the 23 Catandica polling stations, the Frelimo candidate for mayor, Tome Maibeque, won 3,839 votes (73.9 per cent), while his MDM opponent, won 1,353 votes (26.1 per cent).

As with all results from the polling stations, the figures are provisional and will only become definitive when verified by the National Elections Commission (CNE)
