Get ready for Jikinya

Preparations are at an advanced stage for this year’s national Jikinya Dance Festival to be held in the City of Kings on November 29.

The festival encourages children to appreciate and perform Zimbabwean dances and showcases traditional dances by primary school pupils.

The guest of honour this year is the minister for sport, arts and culture, Andrew Langa, and the theme is Our Culture: A Spring of Diversity and Harmony.

The guest group will be Umkhathi Theatre, a Bulawayo-based dance group that scooped the first prize in this year’s Chibuku NeShamwari dance festival. The group will showcase their prowess through various dances, including Amabhiza, which was the first Jikinya Dance Festival’s common dance piece and is usually peformed by the Kalanga people of Matabeleland South Province.

The winners of the Jikinya Provincial Festivals will represent their areas.
