Musician shot dead in Quelimane

Mozambican police in the central city of Quelimane on Thursday shot dead a local musician, Ed Azevedo, who was taking part in a parade celebrating the victory in Wednesday’s municipal elections of the incumbent mayor and candidate of the opposition Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), Manuel de Araujo.

According to a report in Friday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”, Azevedo was killed by a policeman guarding the residence of Zambezia Provincial Governor, Joaquim Verissimo. Further details of the shooting are so far unavailable.

This was the second death in Quelimane in connection with Araujo’s victory, within the space of 24 hours.

The MDM’s own count, based on the results sheets posted at the Quelimane polling stations, gives Araujo 70.12 per cent of the votes. In the election of members of the municipal assembly, the MDM took 66.4 per cent of the vote. These results have yet to be confirmed by the National Elections Commission (CNE).

Meanwhile, the CNE’s executive body, the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE) temporarily suspended its website after somebody had hacked into it to post false results, including victories for the ruling Frelimo Party in the MDM strongholds of Beira and Quelimane.
