The local authority sent a request to Minister Ignatius Chombo for permission to award Chakabuda, a top-of-the range official mayoral Mercedes Benz and a residential stand among other benefits.

Reasons for the Minister’s refusal were not readily available. The request followed shortly after Chombo granted permission to the Gweru City Council to give another MDC-T former mayor, Tedious Chimombe a golden handshake that included a Toyota Prado and a residential stand in Athlone low density suburb. Chimombe also received two months allowance for every year that he served as mayor.

Chimombe was fired by the party for alleged corruption, but Chombo neither investigated the case nor took any other action. Masvingo Town Clerk Adolf Gusha said the local authority had accepted the decision.

“Council had agreed to award him with the exit package after taking into consideration his efforts, when he diligently executed his duties as a ceremonial mayor,” Gusha said.

Chakabuda said he accepted the decision and would continue to work with the new council to ensure that the water augmentation project agreement he signed with the Chinese officials on behalf of council comes to fruition.
