South African drug trafficker arrested

The Mozambican police announced on Monday that a South African woman was arrested at Maputo International Airport last week, and was found to be carrying 3.6 kilos of cocaine in her luggage.

As is usually the case with drug traffickers caught at the airport, she had started her journey in Brazil. Maputo City police spokesperson Orlando Mudumane told reporters that the final destination of the 32 year old woman (whose name was not revealed) was Johannesburg.

Mudumane said the drug has been sent to the central laboratory of the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC), and the detainee will await her trial at the Ndlavela women’s jail.

Also at the airport, the police prevented 64 people from entering the country illegally, including 26 Ethiopians, and 20 Bangladeshis.

Summarising police work in the city over the past week, Mudumane said that 41 people had been detained for a variety of criminal offences, and a further three people were arrested after attempting to bribe members of the traffic police.

The traffic police breathalysed 150 motorists during the week, and a third of them were found to be driving with more than the permitted level of alcohol in their bloodstream.
