Banana’s son raps Zanu (PF)

Nathaniel Banana, son of Zimbabwe’s first President Canaan Banana, has accused Zanu (PF) of being jealous of his father’s achievements in uniting the nation.

This comes two months after Zanu (PF) snubbed the memorial service of his father held at the Mzilikazi Methodist Church and attended by only former politburo member and Zapu president Dumiso Dabengwa and MDC secretary-general Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga, who is also Banana’s niece.

“I am very much convinced that the hard work and spirit of unity which was done by my father when he took over the country from the Ian Smith regime is the one which has seen his name completely side-lined in the country’s historical archives,” said Banana.

“This is pure jealousy, and perhaps fear. But one cannot rule out tribalism judging from the nature of appointments across our public services and political establishments. Banana fell out with Mugabe because of his post-Independence criminal conviction for sodomy. He died of cancer at the age of 67 in the UK and was buried at his rural home in Umzingwane 10 years ago.
