Lumpy skin disease hits Masvingo

Lumpy skin cattle disease has hit Masvingo where over 5,000 cattle have been affected hampering efforts by farmers to rebuild the country’s national heard.

The Department of Veterinary Services is currently carrying out vaccination of all cattle in Masvingo province in the affected areas amid reports that shortage of vaccines and a manpower shortage. The worst affected areas include Gutu , Masvingo, Zaka, Bikita,Mwenezi and Chiredzi where a total of over 5000 cattle have been affected.

“We are working hard to ensure that the situation is under control,” said Hubert Dzinasha, a veterinary department official. “We have dispatched teams to the affected areas but shortage of vaccines, manpower and lack of money by our farmers to buy their own vaccines remains a challenge in our efforts to contain the disease,” he added.

Meanwhile, movement of cattle in Chiredzi, Mwenezi and parts of Bikita has been Suspended and all public auction cancelled due to foot and mouth cattle disease.
