Marondera defies Chombo

The Zanu (PF) controlled Marondera municipality has resolved not to award former MDC-T Mayor, Farai Nyandoro, an attractive exit package as directed by Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Ignatius Chombo, as the instruction was verbal.

Last Monday, a full council meeting agreed not to give Nyandoro the golden handshake of a free E class Mercedes Benz and a medium density stand at 30 percent of the value. The Benz is valued at over $7,000 while medium density stands in Marondera cost around $18,000.

According to the town policy makers, Chombo instructed Provincial Administrator, Cuthbert Ndarukwa through telephone, who later communicated with the District Administrator, James Chiwaru to that effect. Ndarukwa could not be reached for comment.

The full council meeting convened in the absence of the DA, resolved “There is no way we can effect a verbal instruction from the minister.” Chiwaru said he was yet to establish what expired at the meeting which was convened in his absence. Nyandoro described the resolution as ‘a clear defiance of a ministerial directive’.

He had earlier got assurances from the minister by telephone that he would get his package before the end of last week. Sources suspect that the Zanu (PF) council could be settling old scores with Nyandoro, as he defied Chombo directives in the past – notably those to take Zanu (PF) special councillors aboard and award Zanu (PF) Marondera mayor Ralph Chimanikire his exit package.

In Bulawayo, Chombo ordered the local authority to award former mayor, Thabani Moyo an exit package which included a $65,000 Chrysler Dodge vehicle to be purchased for a bookvalue of $7,000. – Nelson Sibanda
