MDC-T councillor accused in stock theft

A councillor from the Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC has been linked to stock theft after three beasts allegedly stolen from a fellow villager in Triangle were recovered at his farm in Chiredzi.

Munyaradzi Hatinahama of Ward 5 in Chiredzi and Perseverance Moyo have already been arraigned before the courts facing charges.

Hatinahama and Moyo allegedly connived to steal three beasts, which they collected from Sarafina Matakara’s residence and drove to Hatinahama’s farm.

The two drove the cattle from Banga village in Triangle and kept them at Hatinahama’s farm.

Hatinahama pleaded not guilty to the charge, while Moyo pleaded guilty to the charge.

In admitting the offence, Moyo told the court that Hatinahama had demanded payment of transport for hiring his vehicle hence he thought of paying him with the beasts.

Hatinahama told the court that he never stole the cattle, but said that Moyo had given him the beasts as payment for services rendered.

The trial of the two continues on February 23.

In another case, 18 villagers from Gulunji village in Chiredzi were last week convicted of malicious injury to property after setting ablaze a house belonging to a fellow villager after accusing her of being a witch.

The 18 villagers all pleaded guilty to the charge and were sentenced to a month in jail or a fine of $30.
