Prince Edward wins Chess Festival

Prince Edward came tops in the boys division of the recent Girls College Chess Festival, in which 17 teams competed. Captained by Lawrence Tavagwisa, PE performed well and unseated the defending champions. The girls division was won by Convent Girls High.

Meanwhile the Harare Schools chess league roared into life this past week. Goromonzi High school continued with its dominance over St Georges College when they won 5-1. Takunda Mudzingwa lost to Anesu Gwezere on board one, while Kudzaishe Manyanya won on board 2. Gino Vas of Saints denied Panashe Gatsi as well as Goromonzi from whitewashing them as he clobbered Gatsi in a pulsating game.

Mabvuku High School dismissed the defending champions St Ignatius by 4,5-1,5. Rufaro Ncube was on board one for Mabvuku while Chabata played board one for St Ignatius. Masvikepi stopped Solomon Chimuzura on board 4. Brian Shokoni drew on board 2 and Mabvuku won all the other boards to register their first win in 2014. Churchill Boys High squared off against Mazowe Boys High School and they lost 4-2.

Newcomers in Division 6 Dzivarasekwa High 1 played against Marlborough and won 5-1 in their first fixture. Mabvuku will be hosting Churchill this week and fireworks are expected in this fixture.
