Robbers kill three in Masvingo

Three people were killed in separate incidents in Masvingo following a spate of armed robberies during the festive season.

A record 10 armed robbery cases were reported in the province.

Police in Masvingo could not release the names of the deceased for fear of jeopardising investigations, but police spokesman Inspector Peter Zhanero confirmed the robberies and the three deaths.

In one of the cases, a gang is reported to have shot a money changer at Ngundu rural service centre in Chivi district after trying to rob him of his cash and valuables.

Witnesses said that three men confronted the money changers at Ngundu in broad daylight and ordered them all to lie down. They fired warning shots into the air. One of the men resisted and was shot dead by the gang.

Touts at the centre confronted the gang of robbers who, having run out of ammunition, fled into nearby mountains.

One of the gang was captured by the touts; a second was arrested a few days later in Chipinge, and the third is still the subject of a police manhunt.

In another incident, armed robbers raided a shop in Zaka and opened fire, killing two people.

According to police sources, the gang raided the store at night and ordered the shop attendant to open all the doors. The attendant refused but the robbers forced open the door and immediately opened fire. They then ransacked the building before getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables.

No arrests had been made at the time of going to print.
