Their lawyer, Gift Mtisi, from the Zimbabwe Lawyer for Human Rights said the students would be charged for contravening Section 37 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act which criminalises participation in gatherings with the intent to promote public violence.
The students were arrested after they staged a demonstration against the decline in education standards in the country as well as the reluctance by Harare Polytechnic authorities to hold Student Representative Council elections.
Among the arrested students were the union’s President, Gilbert Mutubuki as well as Secretary General, Obey Sithole.
The students were arrested by security personnel at Harare Polytechnic who later on called the Zimbabwe Republic Police to pick them.
