Anti-graft campaign claims first scalp

A government campaign against corrupt public officials has claimed its first victim following the arrest of Air Zimbabwe's company Secretary, Grace Pfumbidzayi, who was allegedly involved in fraud that reportedly prejudiced the national airliner of millions of dollars.

Police have confirmed the arrest of Pfumbidzayi who faces six counts of fraud and another of criminal abuse of office and is expected to appear in court soon.

"Pfumbidzayi is facing six counts of contravening section 136 of the Criminal law, where Air Zimbabwe allegedly suffered an actual prejudice of $1, 298 827 88 and Euro 5 895 695-90," said police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba.

"She is also facing allegations of contravening section 174 (1) (a) of the criminal law (codification and reform Act) of criminal abuse of duty as public officer," she added.

Recently the company secretary appeared at an internal disciplinary hearing at which she was found guilty of fraudulently facilitating inflated payments to a local insurance company, Navistar.

In past weeks, reports have emerged of how State linked enterprise heads and boards have fraudulently benefited money from the respective public institutions or helped themselves to hefty salaries and allowances.

Graft has been exposed at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation where a forensic audit is underway, the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company, Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority and the Harare municipality, among others.

The nation waits to see if more heads will roll soon.
