Attempt to save Tsvangirai leads to MDC-T official’s arrest

An attempt to drum up support for MDC-T President, Morgan Tsvangirai, who is reportedly facing ouster from the party, led to the arrest of the party’s Organising Secretary for Highfield West District, Maxwell Taderera, who was today arraigned before the Mbare Magistrates Court facing charges of convening a political meeting without police clearance.

Taderera (55) was charged for contravening Section 25 (1) (a) of the Public Order and Security Act Chapter 11:17 after he allegedly organised a meeting that was attended by 70 MDC-T supporters without notifying the regulatory authority.

It is the State’s case that on February 8, at around 1800 hours, the police received information to the effect that there was an unauthorized political meeting at house number 2453 Glen Norah A, Harare.

“ZRP Glen Norah reacted to the information and found about 70 members of the Movement for Democratic Change with some putting on party regalia, singing and chanting their party slogans.

"The purpose of the meeting was to show solidarity to their party President, Morgan Tsvangirai, whom the organiser said was being persecuted by other senior party members,” read the State outline.

According to the State, Taderera’s conduct was unlawful.

Taderera was today granted $100 bail today.

He was represented by Marufu Mandevere of Kadzere, Hungwe and Mandevere Legal Practitioners.
