Deep Roots band brings music back to Gweru

Afrofusion music band Deep Roots, which has been on a spree of live shows since 2012, are to launch their third album in Gweru, as a “gift” for their fans. It was the first time in years that any music group has launched an album in Gweru.

The eight-member group, led by vocalist Yullisis, has lately been partnering popular artists like Jah Prayzah and Alick Macheso in live shows and national galas. The band was also a force to be reckoned with at last year’s Midlands Arts and Culture Festival. The album’s title track is already popular on Radio Zimbabwe and Star FM.

“Our group, which concentrates more on mbira and generally traditional music, has been greatly received by fans countrywide. Accordingly, we have decided to launch our latest album in Gweru,” said Bond Mususa, the group’s manager.

Other popular musicians, such as dancehall artists Shinsoman, Legion, Mad Nettol, Ikan Bless and Judah B, will be supporting acts.

“We want to spice up the event and make it big. We will be bringing to Gweru some of the favourite musicians who have never staged live shows in the city,” said Mususa.

“We also want to motivate other young and up-and-coming artists to venture into the music industry. We believe if talented but unexposed young artists see their peers hogging the limelight at the event, it will challenge and motivate them to also join the fray – a development that makes our music industry bigger.”

In the past, Gweru has been the starting point for musicians who have risen to stardom in the industry. These include Nasty Trix, Madiz, Mathias Mhere and reggae icon Joe Wailer.
