Lake confident

Malcolm Lake, the Zimbabwe junior cricket captain, recently expressed confidence his team would progress to the Super League stage at the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup. The tournament starts tomorrow in the United Arab Emirates, with Lake’s team pooled in what is arguably the “Group of Death” alongside Canada, South Africa and West Indies. Before their opening game against the West Indies on Sunday, Lake weighed his team’s chances against the Group C op

“We boast a good spin-bowling attack, which is arguably better than that of the South Africans,” said the Zimbabwean all-rounder. “The West Indies are currently struggling to play spin, judging by their series loss against Bangladesh, which predominantly bowled spin. As such, we will be looking to exploit this flaw to our advantage. We have worked on options for our batters in playing spin and fast bowling. Fielding is still a concern, so a lot of work has gone into improving that.”

Zimbabwe will be looking to progress to the business end of the Super League, for the first time since 2006. Meanwhile, Lake is one of five players returning to the tournament. Ryan Burl, Kieran Geyle, Luke Jongwe and Cuthbert Musoko also participated in the 2012 edition held in Australia.

The 2002 event was the most successful for Zimbabwe, as they won the Plate final against Nepal, while wicketkeeper, Tatenda Taibu, was later named Man of the Tournament.
