Bail for Mangoma alleged attackers

Four MDC-T members who were arrested on allegations of assaulting the party’s deputy Treasurer General, Elton Mangoma, were today granted bail by the Harare Magistrates Court.

The four were granted $100 bail each and ordered to report to the police once every week and not to interfere with State witnesses.

They will be back in court on March 19.

Francis Machimbidzofa (38), Enock Mukudu (31), Stefani Jahwi (36) and Samson Nerwande (41) are facing assault charges and have been in custody since Wednesday last week.

The assault on Mangoma came after he made call for leadership renewal within the MDC-T and this allegedly did not go down well with the party’s President, Morgan Tsvangirai’s loyalists.

Of the four accused persons, Nerwande faces another charge of public violence for allegedly assaulting one Angirayi Moyowatidi.

It is the State’s case that Nerwande assaulted Moyowatidi for his alleged allegiance to Mangoma. Initially, the State had opposed bail for the accused persons arguing that their matter was political.

The defence counsel, led by Douglas Mwonzora, who is the party’s spokesperson as well however argues that the State’s case is weak.
