MDC-T moves to avert voter reg slips in by-election

MDC-T has embarked on a process to bar the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission from accepting voter registration slips in the coming by-election of Ward 12 as the party moves to plug all possible rigging by Zanu (PF).

Three candidates are vying for the seat left vacant by the death of councillor Enock Mavhondo (MCD-T). They are Zanu (PF)’s Charles Simbi, RichardNdlovu of the Lovemore Madhuku-led National Constitutional Assembly party and Fortunate Chiokoyo of MDC-T.

There are fears of rigging after the issue of a flawed voters roll was raised last week by Mkoba MP Amos Chibaya. It includes dead people, duplicates and people with fictitious addresses.

In an exclusive interview with The Zimbabwean this week, Chibaya said his party’s intelligence staff had discovered that Zanu (PF) plans to make its supporters use voter registration slips to vote.

These are used as evidence of eligibility to vote by people whose names do not appear on the voters’ roll. Opposition parties said use of the slips was one of the ways in which Zanu (PF) rigged the July 2013 poll.

“This time around there should be no excuse not finding one’s name in the roll because no new registrations have been made since the last election. Our guys have found out that Zanu (PF) plans to use the old tactic to rig the election and so that cannot be tolerated,” explained Chibaya.
