New soccer tourney on the cards

The PSL might have a new 16-team tournament for topflight clubs this season, according to league boss Twine Phiri.

He said negotiations were at an advanced stage with the yet-to-be-revealed sponsors and the competition would involve all the topflight clubs. Already, the PSL has three knockout tournaments – the Mbada Diamonds Cup, the Banc ABC Sup8 and the NetOne Charity Shield.

The new deal is welcome news for local soccer, following recent renewal of the PSL’s sponsorship deal with Delta Beverages, who will sponsor the league through their Castle Lager brand. The previous PSL-Delta marriage, which lasted three seasons, had initially ended at the end of last season.

Phiri said instead of the traditional March to November season, this year’s programme would only begin in April. He retained his chairmanship of the League after he beat Dynamos’ Keni Mubaiwa by 12 votes against three. One team, ZPC Kariba, was not represented at the PSL Annual General Meeting.
