Handball starlet seeks funds

Lack of funds currently afflicting the local handball mother body might put paid to a Marondera teenager’s dream of plying his stint in Europe.

Sophia Gundu, a student at Marondera High School, has been invited to Sweden to participate in the Partille Cup, the largest and most important international youth event for handball.

The event is scheduled will be held between late June and early July in Sweden. Local side, IK Savehof, have invited the 19-year-old Gundu through the Zimbabwe Handball Federation.

The Youth and Sport Organisation (YASO), a local youth empowerment body, has appealed for funds to enable him to travel to Europe.

“The tournament is scheduled for June 28 to July 5, but the tickets have to be paid before the end of April,” said YASO chairman, Benjamin Sekiwa.

IK Savehof are one of the most prominent handball sides in Europe. Their women’s team has won the national championships eight times between 2000 and 2013. The team also competes in the European Handball Federation Women’s Champions League.
