Biti underestimated MDC members

EDITOR - Media revelations that Tendai Biti’s new party is scouting for a leader raises eyebrows. One would have thought, given the determined effort they were making to dislodge Tsvangirai, they were themselves capable of taking over. But alas, we hear they are now head hunting for a leader, just as Welshman Ncube did following the first split of the MDC in 2005.

People should not start battles they are ill-prepared to handle. People should not create an agenda for other people. Strive Masiyiwa, Simba Makoni and Mutumwa Mawere have been mentioned as possible leaders. Makoni will not be interested in the post as he told a press conference earlier this week that he needs to set up structures for his own party.

While it is not clear what the responses of Masiyiwa and Mawere are likely to be, I have some reservations as to their willingness to accept. Knowing the names of the people involved in the new party, I can almost tell who suggested which potential leader and why. Time will tell.

Biti may have realised that he had underestimated the capacity of the mainstream MDC that he has abandoned, or conversely, he had overrated his capacity to lead a small party, let alone a country, and is now backtracking and wants someone who will clean up his mess. – Kennedy Kaitano, Mutare
