Bully pleased with honour

Former Zimbabwe national team and Zimbabwe Saints central defender Henry McKop said recently he felt honoured to received the Zimbabwean Brown Velvet sportsman award.

Zimbabwe Brown Velvet Awards is an evening of song, dance and celebration, as the “legends” from our community are recognised and rewarded for their achievements and accomplishments.

“Nothing can express my happiness than thanking Tracey J Bell and the ZBVA Crew for initiating such a prestigious event that recognises individual achievements in the community across such a broad spectrum. Thank you to everyone that voted for me. I salute Judge Chris Greenland for honouring me by accepting the award on my behalf. This recognition surpasses every other achievement throughout my football career. I also appreciate the role played by Connie Potgieter who appointed herself as my campaign manager,” said McKop.

A product of Zimbabwe Saints FC juniors, he played for the team from 1988 to 1992 before joining Bonner SC of Germany. Within a year he was snapped up by Bristol City in the English Division One League now known as the Championship.

“Bully” was one of the stars of Reinhard Fabisch’s powerful “Dream Team” of the 1990s. In the 1995/96 season he joined Shelbourne Dublin in League 2 of Ireland before moving on to Vorwarts Steyr in the Austrian Bundesliga.

In the 1997-98 season he joined Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa playing until 1999. McKop went on to join Spartak Pretoria (1999), Wits University (2000/2001) and Amazulu Durban (2001/2002) all in South Africa. He was also a regular in the Zimbabwe national team from 1988 to 1998.

He played alongside great players like Bruce Grobbelaar, Peter Nkomo, Benjamin Nkonjera, Mercedes Sibanda, Shelbourne Legend, Mick Neville, Joas Magolego, Ephraim Chawanda, Jonah Phiri and Francis Shonhai.
