Parly adjourns

Zimbabwe’s eight Parliament has adjourned to July 1, 2014.

While the National Assembly and the Senate would resume business early July, Thematic Committees get back to business on June 23.

Since the start of official business early this year, Parliament was mainly seized with challenges regarding alignment of some 400 laws with the new constitution.

A few laws were given priority, among them those pertaining to the Declaration of Rights, freedom of expression and freedom of the media, citizenship, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and provincial as well as metropolitan councils.

Only two Bills found their way into Parliament in the past 12 months.

These were the Electoral Act and the National Prosecuting Authority Act and the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Citizens, civil society and commentators have accused politicians and government of lacking the political will to align the laws with the urgency they deserve.
