The bright start to his career there has culminated in him being named the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rookie of the Year at the recent National Junior College Athletic Association banquet in Plano, Texas.

The 18-year-old had one of the finest freshmen seasons in school history for “The Saints” in 2013-2014, going 15-3 in the fall and 17-7 this spring. Having opened the year by winning the Bethany Invitational, he also clinched the Metro State Invitational singles titles and the championship in the doubles bracket at the Metro State Invite with Alejandro Gonzalez.

The pair finished runners-up at the ITA Fall Regional Tournament and were selected on a wild card to the ITA Small College Nationals in Fort Myers, Florida, where they upset the Number One-ranked team in the country, before they went on to win the ITA Doubles National Championship.

Saurombe opened the year ranked first in the country in doubles with Gonzalez and 10th in the singles nationally. The teenager finished runner-up in both singles and doubles at the Region VI Tournament.

The double-handed backhand specialist, a former Mutare Hillbright College student, said he had worked hard all year and it had paid off.
